Accessibility of an Online Learning System is an issue in most cases. In fact, it is one of the major concerns in terms of communication. It is also a primary subject in education and training. It is associated with the abilities of people. It is also linked with the sophistication of services being accessed. Addressing it as part of delivering education and training programs, is, therefore, a laudable act.
An online learning system has been established before the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, universities, in their distance education programs, use such a system. The cyber community, however, is fast-paced. Everything and everyone that has something to do with its content and processes will have to be updated with information technologies.
PPSC is one of the institutions that started to adapt and be online. It was like a crossroad to us. In the midst of the pandemic, we had to develop and implement our Flexible Learning Management System (FLMS). We could not just wait and see what comes before us. We had to guarantee continuous education and training during the pandemic, a commitment we made.
We were aware of the downside of having processes ahead of the people involved. The processes were pushed by technological development. People were limited by the pandemic. Hence, we could not afford to be careless. We value everyone, the learning facilitators and the learners in particular. We needed to look into their respective situations. Their vulnerabilities before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were duly considered in designing our platforms.
The completion of an enormous task of having FLMS does not stop NPC from moving forward. Hurdles continue to confront us in our attempt to sustain this system and make it better.
As we reflect on how to balance the pacing of the people and the processes, we have been figuring out how to ensure that our learning facilitators and learners are well-engaged. We want them to optimize the use of online platforms along with FLMS. They should be able to interface with applications and be satisfied with outcomes in relation to their studies.
Given all these, we will have coaching and mentoring in the form of bridging sessions. Our main objective here is to have everyone on the same page. Learning facilitators and learners may not be moving in the same speed, thus providing them with common experience makes sense. Here access is made easy and participants are given the leeway to control their level of access to the online learning system. Having this, we realized that access and control should be addressed altogether.
How do we bring into the picture the concept of access and control as regards online learning systems? We have to align the technical back-end design of our system such that they are user-friendly. They should not alienate anyone who would like to access the features embedded in the systems. Access and control to online learning systems is already a positive innovation. If the system becomes similar to applications like Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, or Twitter, then we could say, we are going somewhere genuinely novel.
